Season 2008 Game 8: Flyers

With a bare nine players this week (including our still-injured coach John Connell) we were once again very competitive against a regular Grand Finalist team. Unfortunately the Flyers got the drop on us in the first innings scoring 8 runs to zip. We managed to come back a couple of times but fell short in the last innings when John “JayCee” Connell hit into a double with runners on 1st & 2nd in the bottom of the 7th with none down. Sorry Guys!

The final score Flyers 23 Brewers 16.

Big thanks to Al for organising B&E Fire Protection jackets — we look awesome on the day!

Defence

A definite improvement is coming to the fore as the outfield played strongly and kept the ball in front of the runners and shut down easy advancement to the opposition.

The infield had a couple of glitches with wild throws along with a couple of errors at 1st. The battery worked well and most pleasing was to see Stewy fight back when behind in the count and force the batter to hit the ball.

Communication was good and everyone I am sure enjoyed the game and would be proud of their individual efforts in assisting the team.

Offence

Strong batting performances from Friz (1 HR), Andy (2 singles & a triple), Alan (1 triple), Jarren (2 singles, 1 double, and a triple), Adrian (4 singles), Stewy (2 doubles), Brad (3 singles & a double), John (4 singles), and Peter Speedy made a great return with 4 singles. Well done guys; it is great to see us beginning to hit the ball hard and flat into the gaps for good base hits.

Our base running is still improving and it was magic to see base coaches and all players becoming involved in discussing each situation with one another throughout the day.

Batting

A total of 23 hits from 44 times to bat (500 Av) and 1 BB sees us beginning to find the batting form we are capable of. Keep up the good work and continue to explore and identify you best hitting pitch.

Best Batting: see above.

Best Players: A terrific team effort from everyone.

Plays of the Day.

Brads effort at centre field where he continually kept us all captivated with our hearts in our mouth as he juggled fly balls just to see the reaction from all. Plenty of OH No’s, UHOH, and YES YES YES’s.
