Season 2008 Game 4: Hammers
Welcome this week to two new players: Brad Goldsborough and Peter Goderie. The extra players meant that John could concentrate on coaching this week, which is probably good timing since he was struggling with cracked ribs after being beaten up by Jarren.
Thanks also to Karinda Connell for coming down to score for us this week. Even more so for holding her ground when the Hammers had the audacity to question her scoring!
We started brilliantly again this week, keeping the Hammers scoreless in the first innings and earning a few runs ourselves. Clint was as reliable as ever with the glove in centre outfield, Brett was solid with the glove in the catcher’s positions and some excellent focus and tidy work from Adrian at third and Al at shortstop meant we were looking unbeatable.
Unfortunately our characteristic concentration slump in the third and fourth innings saw us take a pounding from the Hammers. Our careless fielding, dropped catches and lazy batting had the Hammers draw level with us in the fourth and then overtake us in the fifth. Probably the best example of the drop in standards was Stewart running himself out at first. The dreaded Bermuda Triangle happened as 3rd, S/S & 2nd all moved in to catch the “HOT” fly ball that fell between them all. Someone must commit to the catch on all plays!
A sensational double play by Adrian, Al and Jarren and a pep-talk from Andy saw as rally at the end, but it wasn’t enough to contain the Hammers and we lost 18-13.
Best Players:
- Stewart Johnson - Consitent Pitching + 5 hits from 5 (Batted 1000).
- Alan Grose - Great game at S/S + 2 Hits & 1 walk
- Adrian Slee - Very solid at 3rd + 4 hits
- Brett Watkinson - Improving every week behind the plate + 3 hits.
Best Play: An assisted catch at third — bounced from Adrian’s glove and saved by Al — then rocketed to Jarren at first for the double play.
Batted 1000: Andy, Stewart & Peter G.
Runs: Brewers 13 - Hammers 18 (26 Hits).
